Smart Simplicity
A Dormitory Defined by Fiber Cement Expression
Designed for the realities of student housing budgets, this 13-story dormitory proves that architecture doesn’t need luxury materials to deliver meaningful visual impact. With fiber cement cladding as the primary material, the concept embraces practicality while still offering a dynamic and contemporary façade.
The building demonstrates how thoughtful variation—not expensive elements—creates character, identity, and a sense of place.
The project originated from a sales request: show how color variation within fiber cement can elevate façade design in the lower-cost construction segment. The resulting form is intentionally simple—a pragmatic volume resolved through intelligent detailing—yet the façade transforms it into something much more compelling.
By layering dominant tones into patterned compositions, each iteration introduces rhythm and distinction. The façade is animated not by complexity of shape but through strategic use of color, vent elements, and proportion—proving that material constraints can inspire creativity rather than limit it.
